CLASSES: My Stanford Continuing Studies courses are open to the public
SUMMER: Metabolic EXERCISE register HERE
FALL: Efficient SPORTS NUTRITION starts Mon 29 Sept
WINTER: Driving Your METABOLISM
SPRING: Metabolic NUTRITION
I have YouTube MIN COURSES that condense my Stanford classes down to ~90 min each for Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Exercise & “Driving Your Metabolism” (bringing together nutrition, exercise, sleep & stress)
My course notes & audio are on this website: Look for the course READERS (chapters) & AUDIO for each course, which are a deep dive into each topic. The HOMEWORK & webinar DISCUSSIONS are via The Zero % Club
I have been teaching every quarter @ Stanford since 2002:
COMMUNITY: Join the discussion & webinars via my Facebook Group The ZERO % CLUB.
CONSULT: simple adjustments to what you are already doing to get from point A to point B
EMAIL: [email protected] a brief description of your GOALS & your typical everyday EXERCISE & NUTRITION patterns
INCLUDE: your most common MEALS & SNACKS & most importantly WHEN you hydrate & eat COMPARED to when you WAKE, EXERCISE & SLEEP
DISCUSSION: We will Zoom or meet for 1 hour
PROGRAM: I will write your program within a day or two
REVIEW: We go through the program together within a week for clarity
COACHING: Ongoing email & text helps you maintain your momentum
ADJUSTMENTS: We finalize your program a month later based on your feedback to ensure it fits your lifestyle & is achieving your goals
SUMMARY: A 1-hour discussion, a review @ 1 week & finalize it @ 1 month
ONGOING SUPPORT: An annual (or at most quarterly) discussion is usually more than enough to keep pace with changes to someone’s life patterns or goals. Most people appreciate the how the efficiency of my work enables them to recover their metabolic independence immediately after learning what to adjust. Some people want more detailed help in the form of sharing an album of meal photos for ongoing feedback. It is entirely up to each individual.
WHY FIXING OUR NUTRITION IS SO EFFICIENT: Most people only need small adjustments to get to their goals in the same way that fixing a car usually involves at most a few adjustments or new parts, not a complete overhaul. By fixing only what needs fixing, our body and our car can finally start running well again.

ABOUT Dr. Clyde AUDIO & TEXT
I was born underweight because my mom suffered physical trauma during my gestation; this led to my having high body fat, cholesterol & blood pressure throughout childhood & my life, which led to my interest in metabolism. It became clear early on that Calorie balance by simply eating less failed for both psychological & physiological reasons, which is still true today for both myself & the global population suffering from a pandemic of obesity & metabolic disease.
I grew up in Lincoln NE with visits to Luxembourg with my Grandma (where my brother Xavier was born). I recently took my daughter Maya to visit. Maya could not believe I did not have a mascot for my students & therefore created “Little Metabolic” whom she voices to narrate some of my course readers & podcasts.
I went to high school in Lincoln for 1 year before moving to Las Vegas, where I dropped out completely when a friend passed away. My return to the world of the living was centered around a renewed interest in nutrition & exercise.
I joined the Nuclear Engineering Program in the US Navy for 6 years, including 4 on the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson out of Alameda CA. The ship took me around the Pacific & through an overhaul in Bremerton, WA.
The metabolic model I developed over my decades of teaching was based on a direct comparison between the energy flow within the nuclear power plant and within our body to burn Calories, which I now call our “metabolic flow.”
Our metabolic flow brings together the oxygen from our breath, nutrients from our food & DNA gene copies from quality sleep to nourish & therefore drive cellular vitality. Cellular vitality underlies any benefits we get from stress, including the physical stress of exercise. We cannot benefit from anything we cannot heal from, either physiologically or psychologically. Longevity, health, healthy weight loss & gain & fitness ultimately depend on taking care of our cells.
After the Navy, I studied chemistry @ NAU in Flagstaff AZ & then @ Stanford for my PhD before teaching @ Stanford & doing metabolism research @ UCSF.
I have had an addiction to powerlifting since high school, which both improved & reduced my health at the same time because of injuries & overtraining. This is why my interest in kinesiology & sports nutrition has always been just as intensive as my interest in metabolic health. Only by teaching courses on all of these topics repeatedly did I come to realize research clearly indicates that the body shuts down during excessive dieting or exercise via the same mechanism. I am forever grateful to Roger Cooke at UCSF for guiding & allowing me to research this mechanism under the microscope. Never could I have imagined that I would be looking at muscle fibers shutting down the same way mine had been shutting down from trying to lose weight or deadlifting too much. It all became clear when looking through the right lens with the right perspective.
I am humbled & honored to have been able to do research, teach & work with so many amazing people in the area of metabolism for what amounts to 3 decades, including some years focused on nutrition & exercise separately before realizing how powerfully they converge to leverage each others’ benefits.
